ATLANTA – St. Bonaventure alum Jaylen Adams has spent the past few months making frequent trips to Atlanta as part of his first season as a professional.
It seems as though Adams will be spending a lot more time in Atlanta the rest of this season.
Adams, who was signed to a two-way deal with the Atlanta Hawks following last summer’s NBA Draft, had spent much of the season shuttling between Atlanta and the Erie Bayhawks of the NBA G League. Those trips south apparently impressed Hawks officials as Adams has reportedly had his contract guaranteed for the rest of the season, making him a full-time member of the Hawks roster.
ESPN NBA analyst and St. Bonaventure Class of 1991 graduate Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the deal.
Adams figures to take over Atlanta’s back-up point guard spot behind Trae Young. The Hawks finalized a buyout with Jeremy Lin this week.
Adams has impressed all season while playing in Erie. With the Bayhawks, Adams averaged 15.8 points, 6.3 assists and 4.9 rebounds in 19 starts.
Earlier in the season, Adams had appeared in 10 games with the Hawks and scored 13 points in reserve action.
During his time with Erie, Adams has had several outstanding performances.
In a game vs. West Chester in November, he scored the second-most points in franchise history when he poured in 44 points. That night he also tied Erie’s all-time record with 10 three-pointers.
An Honorable Mention All-American selection by the Associated Press following his senior season, Adams’ name is written throughout the Bonaventure record books.
Over his Bonnies career, Adams was a three-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection. He is the top scoring guard in school history with 1,912 points. He also ranks second on the team’s all-time list for three-pointers (270) and third in assists (590). Over his four seasons, Adams helped the Bonnies to 87 wins, which is the most ever for a graduating class. As a senior, he set the program record with 10 three-pointers in a 44-point effort vs. Saint Louis and helped the Bonnies to the NCAA Tournament and First Four win over UCLA.
In the 2018 NBA Summer League, he averaged 10.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game with the Hawks.
