Monday Morning means It’s time for “Yeah Science!,” covering the most important nerdy news for your brain you may have missed. If you see anything you want to read more about scroll over the text to find the link. Here’s a quick rundown of last week in science . . .
1. NASA renamed its headquarters in D.C. after Mary Jackson, the first black female NASA engineer. She was played by Janelle Monáe in the movie “Hidden Figures”. (The building used to be called Two Independence Square.)
2. Canadian researchers looked at 57 different social behaviors to find out which ones shorten our lifespan the most. The top three that can kill you are smoking, alcohol, and divorce. I did not see that last one coming.
3. A new study confirmed a 50-year-old theory that aliens could potentially use black holes as an infinite energy source. This is a crazy one folks, I had to reread the article about 3 times before I started to get a grasp on it.
4. A study on dolphins found they don’t just learn new skills from their mom. They also learn from watching their friends. Dolphins… they’re just like us!
5. And a study at Princeton found hummingbirds can see way more colors than we can, because they have an extra cone in their retinas that can see ultraviolet light. Dogs and cats have 2 cones, we have 3 (like a printer, you put in 3 cartridges and can print any color), and humming birds have 4. So they can literally see colors that we don’t know exist.
