A Georgia man was charged for allegedly impersonating a cop to scam a registered sex offender in Bradford out of $1,000.
33-year-old Rashawn Scott of Claxton is charged with felony identity theft, theft by deception, theft by unlawful taking, theft by extortion, receiving stolen property, impersonating a public servant and furnishing false information.
The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 23, 2022, the man registered on the state police Megan’s Law website went to the Lewis Run state police barracks and attempted to give two gift cards to the police communications officer to pay off a fake warrant after getting a phone call from a fake police officer who identified himself as “Sgt. Harding.”
Scott had been serving a prison sentence in Georgia prior to being arraigned in Bradford on Wednesday and he was remanded to McKean County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
A hearing has been scheduled for April 10.
