Jake Guentzell scored twice to reach the 40-goal mark, NHL scoring leader Nikita Kucherov had two goals and an assist, and the Tampa Bay Lightning rallied to beat the Buffalo Sabres 7-4 on Sunday.
Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said that once Tampa Bay got some momentum, they never looked back. “If you look at some of the chances we had in the first period,” said Ruff, “ we had four or five point-blank between Thompson walking in. Austin walking in; we had we had good opportunities. I think we followed that up that goal Followed it up with a couple good plays and then Quinn made a great play on his winner. I mean beating Headman again Krebs on the back door. I think we just we stayed with it.”
Ruff continued, “I mean we had two goalposts First period or a post in a crossbar or whatever it was… But, I just think there’s a quick couple goals he got in the second, deflated us, and we never recovered.”
Buffalo is now winless in their last three games since they had a five-game winning streak. Lindy Ruff, he remains stuck on 899 career wins. He needs just one more to join Scotty Bowman, Joel Quenville, Paul Maurice, and Barry Trotz-the only coaches with 900 wins. Buffalo, they’re at home tomorrow night when they’ll host Toronto
