Tomorrow will be the 10th anniversary of the end of the longest manhunt in New York State history.
The hunt for convicted cop killer Ralph “Bucky” Phillips actually ended in Warren County, PA – just across the state line from Carroll, New York, in Chautauqua County – when a sheriff’s deputy spotted Phillips, and the fugitive knew the hunt was over, and he lost.
Phillips escaped from the Erie County, New York, Correctional Facility in April of 2006 using a can opener to cut through the ceiling and roof. In June he shot New York State Trooper Sean Brown near Elmira. On August 31 he shot troopers Joseph Longobardo and Donald Baker. Brown and Baker survived. Longobardo died on September 3.
Phillips is currently serving a prison sentence of life plus 40 years without the possibility of parole.
