On Friday night, Alex Nedeljkovic became the first goalie in NHL history to score a goal and get an assist in the same game, while also making 40 saves in Pittsburgh’s 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres. When that feat was brought up to the netminder on the team plane, his teammates started chanting his name, “Ned”!, “Ned”!. They had done that in the locker room, too, following a group photo to commemorate the achievement.
After the game, Nedeljkovic admitted when he touched the puck, he really didn’t know where it was going. “So I got up behind the net, had to kind of spin around, and I just, I let it go,” said an exhausted Alex. And I didn’t know at first if it was online. It could have been in the corner. It could have got two feet off the ground or not even left the ice. I wasn’t sure. I got a little bump from one of their guys spun me around again. So I didn’t know. I didn’t see it until it was probably like maybe at the far blue. And at that point, like, you know, I saw it was online, but I didn’t know if it, I saw it was on the ice, so I didn’t think it had much to it, but everybody was going nuts. And I saw Carl had his arms in the air, and I was like, oh, this is going to go in. So, yeah, and then just straight beeline for the bench after that. “
After that exciting win in Buffalo against the Sabres on Friday night, the Penguins traveled to D. C. on Saturday night and came back down to earth as they lost to the Washington Capitals four to one. Tonight, (January 20) they take on the L. A. Kings in Los Angeles. The puck drops at 10:30 p. m. Eastern time.
