The trial of the New Jersey man charged with stabbing author Salman Rushdie during a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in 2022 began today.
Opening statements were made for the prosecution and defense and Rushdie himself is expected to testify at the trial.
27-year-old Hadi Matar has pled not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault.
It’s alleged that Matar’s attempted assassination was backed by the Lebanon-based group Hezbollah.
